Medicinal Baths

“The plants have enough spirit to transform our limited vision.”— Rosemary Gladstar

There are many different ways to bathe. Taking a bath is a powerful way to take care of not just your body but your entire system’s energy. This is especially important during times of great transformation, which we’re all going through right now. Stress is the leading cause of dis-ease in the body; it breaks down our immune system the fastest and it leaves us feeling tired, dried out, and lifeless.

Relaxing in a medicinal bath has the capacity to boost your immune function and also nurture your mental health. It’s a practice I have been amplifying regularly over the last five months, and it is feeding my soul in many ways. Whether you have 3 minutes or 30 minutes, there is a practice here to support you, nourish your entire system, and leave you feeling centered, at ease, and at home inside your bones.

Take a look at my three favorite types of baths below. My hope is that you can begin to incorporate them into your routine and enjoy allll of the yummy benefits. And, to learn more about exploring your soul home, sign up for my virtual Soul Speak course! We begin Monday, August 24.

Bath Magic: My 3 Favorite Remedies

1. Salt

Salt is the jam. Salt baths are even better. I love them so much that I keep a large container of salt and a small shovel next to my bathtub for easy access. Salt baths help cleanse and remove negative energies and vibrations from the spiritual body; they are used in many traditions for purification and to connect to physical/spiritual energies in order to harmonize them.

While each type of salt has its own unique properties, I like to use a blend of pink Hamalayan salt, dead sea salt, and Epsom salt. Add a cup to your next warm bath and soak for at least 30 minutes. No need to rinse off after — just allow the salt to absorb into your skin.

Have 3 minutes?

If you only have a few minutes, you can enjoy washing your hands with salt 1-2x a day. If you’re paying close attention, you will feel your energy shift, and it will feel like relief.

Don’t have a bath tub?

If you don’t have a bath tub, get a large bowl, pot, or container and enjoy a salty foot soak.

Tip: When you add the salt in, envision light pouring into the bathtub, transforming the water into its highest possible vibration. Liquid light.

2. Herbs

“Using plants is merely facilitating a biochemical conversation which is often far beyond our comprehension and our understanding.”— Bevin Clare

Plant medicine and nervous system support is the medicine of the future. Creating a bath experience with specific herbs and natural elements can facilitate and amplify the healing process. Herbal baths work through osmosis (through your skin) and by inhalation. Your skin receives the plant medicine and your lungs receive the pleasing aromas.

3 ways to enjoy an herb bath:

  1. Simply add a handful of herbs directly into hot bath water

  2. Brew some herbal tea in a pot and then add the steeped tea to your bath

  3. Create an herb tonic (instructions below)

Choose your healing herbs according to your needs:

  • Chamomile relieves pain, nurtures menstrual discomfort, and provides relief from itchy insect bites

  • Eucalyptus promotes calming, opens your lungs, and helps you breathe

  • Lavender promotes intuition, calms your nerves, and rejuvenates your skin

  • Mint stimulates and heals your skin while cooling the body

  • Orange blossoms lift your spirit, aid in relaxation, and can lower blood pressure

  • Rosemary promotes relaxation, balances the nervous system, and is a cleansing tonic for the skin

  • Basil excellent for the calming the nervous system and sore muscles

  • Sage prevents stiff, sore muscles after a workout and nurtures menstrual discomfort

  • Rose petals calm and soothe the heart while relieving inflammation; create a harmonious mood

Herb Tonic

Create an herb tonic by steeping your herbs of choice in hot water for at least 6 hours. Then, use it as a bath shower by pouring 12-20 oz of this tonic over all major energy centers along the back of the spine and down the center of your torso. Use any temperature of your choice; I prefer it at room temperature after a hot bath or shower. This method is great for energetic cleansing, is a wonderful practice at the end of a shower before bed. I recommend doing it 9 days in a row for best results. The idea is that what you are cleansing goes right down the drain, instead of you soaking in it.

Tip: For even better sleep, drop into a 5-10 minute meditation during and after you pour the tonic over your energy centers; be with the herb aromas and listen deeply.

A few of my favorite bath tonic and herb bath blends:

  1. Lavender and Rosemary

  2. Lavender and Basil

  3. Rosemary, Sage, and Eucalyptus

  4. Rose petal, Chamomile, and Orange Blossom

3. Essential Oils

Like herbs, essential oils used in an aromatherapy bath provide a myriad of health benefits. Plus, it feels super luxurious! Make sure you purchase your essential oils from a reputable company like DoTerra, who offers high quality and Certified Therapeutic Grade essential oils with no dilution or extra additives. Then, you can add a few drops of your favorite scent directly into your tub.

Pro Tip: Add the essential oils drops directly into salt, then add the salt into the bath water. The oil will bind to the salt and immerse more fully into the bath water instead of floating on top of the surface.

  • Lavender calms the nervous system, promotes relaxation, and can ease insomnia

  • Lemon & Sweet Orange lightens the mood with a happy, uplifting smell; can help transform anger

  • Rose Geranium balances and relaxes the nervous system; supports menstrual discomfort

  • Ylang Ylang is calming and acts as an aphrodisiac; nurtures the emotional heart

  • Sandalwood benefits all skin types while being grounding and relaxing

  • Cedarwood helps oily skin and is emotionally relaxing and centering

  • Frankincense deepens the breath upon inhalation, assisting in meditation, nurtures the lungs, and can be used as a sedative

  • Bergamot is wonderful for anxiety and stress relief

  • Jasmine helps dry, sensitive skin and soothes the emotions, creating a sense of hopefulness and harmony

  • Rose soothes the heart, lifts the mood, and is emotionally comforting

A few of my favorite bath blends:

  1. Lavender, Wintergreen, Cypress, and Eucalyptus

  2. Lemon and Lavender

  3. Bergamot and Lavender

  4. Lavender, Rose Geranium, Clary Sage, and Chamomile

Enjoy!
